Who knows – at the moment we’re approaching the threshold to many possibilities (and here I must resist the temptation to go off about quantum mechanics).  What will the future consist of?  Eurobeige?  A Europe fragmented and tribalised?  American globalisation?  Religious fundamentalism imposed by Middle Eastern terrorists?  The growth of India and China and with this, the development of a completely different form of society?  I hope it can be a European rainbow, but for that future to happen, we must all learn the lessons of tolerance and paradox.

In the end though, our guide is clear.  Whether our future is colourful, beige or blood-soaked, our job is to discover how to apply the greatest commandments: to love God and to love our neighbour.
